Electric Art first opened in 1996. The first art products we created were Neon Art sculptures—miniature illuminated figurines like flamingos and cactuses. This led to the idea of creating Neon Pictures.
We found a popular poster called Boulevard of Broken Dreams, painted by artist Gottfried Helnwein, featuring Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Humphrey Bogart gathered in a diner. The artwork was perfect for adding neon lighting, and the interplay between light and image created something entirely new—our first major success.
We expanded with works from artist Chris Consani, featuring the same iconic figures in playful scenes like Game of Fate, Legal Action, and Java Dreams. These paintings lent themselves perfectly to our lighting techniques and became staples of our collection.
By 1998, we began working with classic diner scenes like Rosie’s Diner, Steak ’n Shake, and Galaxy Drive-In, incorporating 50s-era cars and nostalgic Americana. These became some of our most recognizable and best-selling designs. From there, we expanded into muscle car artwork and custom-designed pieces celebrating automotive culture.
In 2002, we introduced what would become our all-time best seller: Foggy Night in Paris, a photograph by Brassai. With carefully placed low-voltage lighting, we brought the scene to life in a subtle, atmospheric way that defined our signature style.
A Note on Our Craft Today
We’ve been creating Electric Art since the late 1990s, and like anything that lasts nearly three decades, things have evolved.
In our earlier years, we operated out of a large warehouse with a full production staff and sourced materials by the container load. Our products often included features such as gloss lamination, integrated on/off switches and white cords.
Today, we are a much smaller, hands-on operation. Every piece is still made by hand, but production methods and materials have changed over time due to cost, availability, and scale.
As a result:
- We no longer use aluminum frames nor the injected molded plastic frame
- Built-in on/off switches are no longer part of the design
- All pieces now feature a matte lamination finish
- Power cords and adapters may vary (most are now black rather than white)
While the construction has evolved, our goal remains the same—to create unique, handcrafted illuminated artwork that brings each image to life.
If you’ve owned one of our older pieces, you may notice differences. That’s simply the result of nearly 30 years of adapting and continuing to create in a changing world.
If you ever have questions about a product or feature, we’re always here to help—just reach out.
